BMW's sharpest iX3 price in years comes with a warning from its own CEO

Entry pricing now sits under the Luxury Car Tax threshold and below the outgoing model's sticker, but BMW Australia says the move is product-specific, not a new direction.

A price that walks backwards from the old model

Compared with the model it replaces, the new iX3 walks backwards in price. The entry-level iX3 40 arrives in the fourth quarter of 2026 at $89,900 before on-road costs, where the old base car opened at $91,000 — a discount applied to a vehicle that moves to BMW's dedicated Neue Klasse EV platform, gains a larger battery and more range, and carries the brand's latest technology. The 40's price landed in June, months after BMW first announced the range in March. The dual-motor 50 xDrive began reaching customers in late June at $109,900 plus on-roads, which places it under every all-wheel-drive Audi Q6 e-tron and Porsche Macan on sale, and narrowly beneath the electric Mercedes-Benz GLC400 at $112,200 plus on-roads. The 50 xDrive serves as the range flagship.

What 805 kilometres of range actually involves

The range figure is the headline. The 50 xDrive quotes 805km of WLTP range from a 108.7kWh net nickel manganese cobalt battery — a figure certified with 20-inch alloy wheels fitted. The iX3 40 steps down to an 82.6kWh pack but still claims up to 635km on the WLTP cycle. No rival BMW names in this segment publishes anything close. Inside, the platform change brings a cabin with no carry-over from the previous iX3 or the current combustion X3: a 43.3-inch Panoramic Vision display spans the width from A-pillar to A-pillar, supplemented by a head-up display and a 17.9-inch touchscreen running BMW Operating System X. The exterior is equally new, and the whole car rides on the Neue Klasse dedicated EV platform — a genuine departure from the previous generation's underpinnings.

Why the tax man is part of the deal

The $89,900 sticker matters beyond the showroom. It sits under the $91,661 Luxury Car Tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles, which keeps the iX3 40 eligible for Fringe Benefits Tax exemptions on a novated lease. It also undercuts the cheapest Audi Q6 e-tron, the single-motor rear-wheel-drive variant that opens at $99,818 plus on-roads — a figure above that same threshold. The outgoing iX3 was never positioned to duck the line, opening at $91,000 plus on-roads. For a buyer salary-packaging an electric SUV over two or three years, the difference between $89,900 and $91,000 is not cosmetic; being under the threshold changes how the vehicle is taxed each year of the lease.

The market was already moving — BMW says it wasn't following

Not a reaction to rivals, insists BMW Group Australia CEO Vikram Pawah — even though the field has been shifting. Lexus slashed its RZ pricing by over 30 per cent, with the RZ500e Luxury now $84,500 before on-roads (down $36,559 on the RZ450e Luxury it replaces) and the Sports Luxury down $42,059, both under the LCT threshold. Cadillac re-priced the Lyriq to $90,000 plus on-roads, down from $122,000, after a period of special offers. Pawah's answer: 'It was priced independently… If you look at the competition, then you have to look at the spec level as well. It's not just the price. It's the content as well.' He also rejects the idea that the iX3 signals a broader pricing direction: 'It is not an indication of any trend of the future. Don't read too much into it.'

The internal chain reaction

The sharp iX3 pricing also forced a re-balance inside BMW's own showroom. Shortly after the March announcement, the brand cut the small iX1 xDrive 30 by $8,900 to $77,900 plus on-roads, and the iX2 xDrive 30 by $7,700 to $79,900 — an effort to stop buyers skipping the older small SUVs for a new-generation model at a similar price. Leanne Blankenberg, BMW Australia's corporate communications general manager, frames the logic as internal: 'We also look internally in our own price hierarchy with all our models and make sure that the cars are all positioned appropriately against each other.' That hierarchy will face another squeeze when the related i3 electric sedan arrives early in 2027; pricing is unannounced but it will almost certainly undercut a similarly specified iX3. BMW Australia has declined to give sales targets for the new-generation model.
